With the twists and turns and the valley and hills we were passing by, I felt a distinct feeling of warmth, deep in my soul. The faint feeling of déjà vu or something familiar. Yet, I brushed it off as just another feeling. The roads, and the pathway we were walking by, seemed to have been embedded in the depth of my mind. I realised that I had been to this very village, back in 2014, along with my family. We had arrived at the village of Talchindri, a peaceful and hilly pocket, situated 30 minutes away from Semiliguda, Odisha. In about 9 years’ time, so much had changed, and yet many things remained just as it was.
The changes I saw were all for good. In place of mud houses stood brick houses. The roads were clean and neat. At a distance, I could see the vibrant tents that were set up for the medical camp. It reminded me of the colourful tents that used to be set up, for marriages or festivals, back in my childhood days. It was a thrilling sight! We were welcomed with garlands and happy faces around.
More than 600 patients had gathered, hoping to meet our Navjeevan Medical team. There were patients with various ailments and not all were related to surgical issues. Navjeevan Medical team met around 20 plus people with thyroid issues. Most did not have investigative reports with them, so those in need of surgical intervention were taken to a Lab facility in Koraput and the required tests were done.
With people having travelled from afar, our team felt the need to provide food and so, scrumptious meal was provided at the camp facility. Talchindri can boast of a cool climate, with a cool breeze flowing through the day. The cool breeze on the outside seemed to touch my very heart. It reminded me of what I’d read before “For you will go out with joy and be led in peace; The mountains and the hills will break into shouts of joy before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.” It did feel like the mountains and hills were joyful and singing and swaying to a piece of music not audible to human ears!
There were many patients with various ailments and the Navjeevan Medical team did its best to provide service to everyone. The consultation and check-up went on till 07:00 in the evening.
At the end of day two, 50 patients were selected for Surgery, including minor, major, pediatric cases etc. Another 26 patients are on the probable list, awaiting investigative reports. Our work is not yet complete. These camps make us realise that many people hesitate to get medical treatment for various reasons. As responsible citizens keen on the well-being of our fellow beings, Navjeevan Community Development Society would like to venture out to do more camps beneficial to our people in the villages. We will strive to help transform lives, one village at a time.
