What are the things a diabetic patient should be aware about?

  1. Routine visit to your Doctor (preferably once every 3 months)
  2. Do the annual and periodic labs as recommended by your Doctor. Diabetic panel includes labs to check for Diabetic Nephropathy, cholesterol, etc.
  3. In the event of even mild chest pain, exertional dyspnea, Dizziness or weakness please contact your doctor immediately (It could be the beginning of a major CV event like heart attack or stroke). When suggested by the doctor do the relevant cardiac workup (Please DO NOT postpone or ignore)

Follow healthy diet patterns:

  1. Diet that is high in fibre.
  2. Green leafy vegetables.
  3. Reduce the consumption of deep fried or oily items.
  4. Drinking 10-12 glasses of water per day is advised.
  5. Doing daily aerobic activities like, walking, swimming, biking, or dancing for at least 45 minutes a day, 5 days a week is recommended.
  6. Annual eye check up to look for early changes of diabetes in the eye (Diabetic retinopathy) is advised.
