Baribai’s road to recovery

During the follow-up camp, we met Baribai, who was in her thirties, suffering for a long time from a bleeding issue. Due to financial constraints, her family was unable to help her get proper treatment. After examining her, it was determined that she was in need of an emergency surgery. She was in much pain and to make matters worse, her Haemoglobin count was at 3.1, too low for her to undergo the surgery. It became evident that she needed a blood transfusion, and so was given 6 pints (about 3 litres) of blood. With that, her haemoglobin count rose to 7.5. It was still too low, so she had to undergo another round of blood transfusion while on the operating table, to have her uterus removed. Post Op, she had yet another transfusion of about 2 pints (about 1 litre) of blood. Baribai could be saved due to the timely intervention that came in the form of the Navjeevan medical team.
